07/05/2018: “Paulette” by Balla Et Ses Balladins

The groove on this one is just classic; the guitar playing in particular is just stellar. It’s a very relaxed, summery tune, from the casual funk of the congas to the brass sections.

The song was released in 1980 in the Republic of Guinea, on Objectif Perfection.

Balla Et Ses Balladins was at that time an orchestral band set up by the state to promote traditional Guinean music. Their music is therefore rooted heavily in folk music, played with traditional instruments and styles.

Nevertheless, there’s a distinct funky undertone to the whole thing, which really helps the song to maintain that groove. It’s the kind of song you can have on in the background, or get completely lost in.
