Prog rock bands are notorious for lengthy, inscrutable high concept pieces. Marillion are not immune.
But ‘Torch Song’, like most of their 1987 Clutching At Straws, is accessible. It’s 4 minutes. It has a solid hook. The theme is obviously alcoholism – deep, complex, but not hopelessly opaque.
I quite like it, and, for song of 30 years vintage, it has aged nicely. Mellow with notes of melancholy!
