11/04/2022: “Torch Song” by Marillion

Prog rock bands are notorious for lengthy, inscrutable high concept pieces. Marillion are not immune.

But ‘Torch Song’, like most of their 1987 Clutching At Straws, is accessible. It’s 4 minutes. It has a solid hook. The theme is obviously alcoholism – deep, complex, but not hopelessly opaque.

I quite like it, and, for song of 30 years vintage, it has aged nicely. Mellow with notes of melancholy!
