Ana Tijoux is a socially conscious rapper from Chile. Strictly speaking, she is French, born to Chilean parents fleeing the right-wing Pinochet dictatorship. But she built her career in Chile, rapping in Spanish.
‘Shock’ stridently calls out Chile’s virulent strain of neoliberalism, decrying the rule of corporations and vested interests. Tijoux weaves in the history of oppression in the country – which, in many ways, shaped her own identity.
Chile elected a left-wing president in December 2021 after a wave of discontent with the system. So perhaps this song was more prescient than it seems!
