Unknown Mortal Orchestra are one of the most exciting new bands. Partly this is because of their variety – while remaining firmly rooted in the ‘indie’ sphere, they encompass sounds ranging from funk, psychedelic rock, and pop.
This one is chilled out, with a funky bassline driving the song. And, in common with much of the band’s music, it’s fairly weird.
Taken from 2015’s Multi-Love, which is about… well, the challenges of negotiating an open relationship, “Necessary Evil” is an exploration of how this can put tension on the individual’s involved.
You might not immediately get that from the trippy lyrics. But when it’s brought together like this, the winning formula which has made the band so critically acclaimed is evident.
