Ibibio Sound Machine sound like they are from 1980s Nigeria. They aren’t – the band was formed in 2013 in London.
That’s not to say they don’t have a line to Afrobeat heritage. Eno Williams, the British-Nigerian vocalist, sings in her original Ibibio language.
The disjointed funky bassline and old school vocals play host to a futuristic ensemble of synths. It’s eminently danceable and entirely entrancing.
“The Talking Fish” was released in 2014 on the band’s self-titled debut album.
