12/05/2021: “Walk Of Life” by Dire Straits

“Walk Of Life” counts among one of Dire Straits’ best. And that’s saying something!

The song refers to the practice of ‘busking’, or playing an instrument in public for loose change. He’s singing the classics; he’s got passion; he does it all day and all night.

So what is Mark Knopfler saying?

A nod from one performer to another, or a light-hearted shrug at life?

It isn’t clear, it doesn’t matter. The main thing is to revel in the joyous, life affirming brilliance of the song. From the unmistakable organ riff during the chorus, to the rock n roll guitar playing, there’s a lot to love!

The song was released as a single from 1985’s astoundingly excellent album, Brothers In Arms.
