When I first heard Martin Campbell, I assumed he was a product of 1970s Jamaica. The production is heavy roots, the singing militant dread.
But he’s actually a white English guy whose career got started in earnest in the 90s. Even this song was released on his own Log On! record label in 2007, on a 4 track EP of the same name.
I only point this out, because he really has nailed that roots foundation sound!
“Ignorance and Poverty” is sung over a chest rattling bassline, and warns in general terms of the negative social effects of bad education and inequality. It’s one of Campbell’s biggest tracks – showcasing his abilities as a producer as well as a singer.
