Queen, for whatever reason, excelled at soundtracks. Perhaps that epic 80s Stadium Rock vibe helps. It’s bombastic and full of feeling, especially with Freddie Mercury at the helm.
The film in question here was 1986’s fantasy flick Highlander. The movie had no OST of its own, but A Kind Of Magic, released in summer ’86, is broadly the soundtrack. “Princes Of The Universe” is the theme tune.
There’s a lot going on in the track. The choruses are fast, hard rocking, epic Queen, not shying away from the distinctively Queen backing vocals. In contrast, the verses are tense and dramatic.
The song is undoubtedly stamped with its time. Retrospectively though, it’s a great bit of fun!
