19/08/2018: “Aqua Marina (Paradise Mix)” by The Countach

The word “Balearic” usually refers to the island chain containing Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza.

But it also means a style, or a certain vibe, of music popular on Ibiza in the late 80s and early 90s. It’s an eclectic mixture of genres, but you know it when you hear it. And this song is about as Balearic as it gets…

Released in 1990 in Italy, the track lifts a lot from Santana’s 1979 song “Aqua Marine”. It then applies a magic Italo-House brush to give the song new life as a funky Ibiza classic. Imbued with new energy, the song retains its innate chilled out beach vibes. You can almost feel that salty sea breeze!

That groovy Italian flavour translates perfectly to the chilled Ibiza style, and the song jams away in fine style. The latter half of the song is where the really originality comes into play, with horns, piano, and string synths all joyously ringing out in a sandy symphony.

Such great beach vibes even when it’s an overcast day in a city!
